What is QUARK?

QUARK is a control architecture for AI-assisted systems. Its job is not to make a language model sound more human. Its job is to stop intelligence from automatically turning into authority.

Before an action, QUARK asks

  1. What is being requested?
  2. What evidence supports the request and the proposed result?
  3. Who authorized the action?
  4. Is the action necessary for the stated purpose?
  5. Is there a less invasive or less risky way to help?
  6. What is uncertain or unknown?
  7. What data is needed, for how long, and why?
  8. Can the model act, must a human review, or must the system deny?

Epistemic events, not hidden certainty

QUARK treats claims, sources, corrections, uncertainty, authorization and tool actions as traceable events. It is designed to distinguish what is known, inferred, claimed, disputed, corrected and unknown.

Minimum sufficient help

More data and more intervention are not automatically better. QUARK prefers the minimum sufficient help needed to serve the human's goal while preserving dignity, privacy and agency.

Replaceable models

The underlying model is a component. QUARK is intended to remain valid even when that model changes. The constitution belongs above the model, not inside a model's personality.
